Ceramics have been produced in Boleslawiec, Poland dating back to the medieval times. Since the 18th century, a new decoration method using a brown glaze with white decorations became highly desired throughout Europe including royalty.
Today several factories in Boleslawiec produce decorative ceramics. However, the finest quality stoneware both in design and decoration is produced by the cooperative, Ceramika Artystyczna- "Artistic Ceramics." Most of this beautiful art produced by this company is exported throughout the world. Each piece of stoneware is stamped on the bottom with this factory's insignia. The stamped marking associated with Ceramika Artystyczna is represented on each page of our site.

The History of Polish Pottery and Ceramika Artystyczna |
 |
The town of Boleslawiec (Bowl-e-swa-vee-etz), Poland is located on the Bobr River in the southwest region of Poland on the German and Czech borders. This region of the world has been a potter's community dating to the 7th century. The natural resource of this region's special clay is mined on the river bank of the Bobr River in Boleslawiec.
Ceramika Artystyczna-"Artistic Ceramics" opened its productin in 1950, post war, in the former factory "Paul und Sohn" (1893-1945). The varieties of production forms include numerous museum copies and traditional shapes. Stamped pottery decorations, using the traditional hand sponging method with intricately cut sponges, incorporating the famous "eye of the peacock's tail" motif, have been produced since the beginning of the 19th century. These beautiful works of art are recognized among the finest examples of European stoneware. In the past history, village craftsmen and peasants of lower Silesia, originally inspired by the peacock's feather motif, added their simple technique and beauty to clay objects. These works of art have long been admired for the uniqueness and decorative appeal. Today, each piece is hand painted and either bears the initials or name of the artist who created the original decorations that are exquisitely painted on each piece of this functional stoneware.
You may enjoy viewing a selection of original pieces in a museum in Boleslawiec, Poland.
Ceramika Artystyczna, in Boleslawiec, has won numerous international awards for excellence in quality and design competing with over 157 countries in the world.
